Bull Shoals Dam was completed in July of 1951 and is located approximately
7 miles north of Cotter, Arkansas at White River Mile 418.6. It
has a maximum height above the river bed of 256 feet, is 2,256
feet in length, has 17 Spillway Crest Gates, and is the fifth
largest concrete dam in the United States. Bull Shoals Lake has
a surface area of approximately 45,440 surface acres, 740 miles
of shoreline, and a lake elevation above "mean sea level"
of 654 feet at the top of the Conservation Pool and 71,240 surface
acres, 1,050 miles of shoreline, and a lake elevation above "mean
sea level" of 695 feet at the top of the Flood Control Pool.
On the average the lake will be at or below the figures used for
the Conservation Pool because that is what is used as the guide
level for the generation of hydroelectric power. Both the Dam
and Lake are controlled by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and
general information can be obtained through the Resident Engineer,
Mountain Home Resident Office, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mountain
Home Arkansas, 72653. The telephone number is 501-425-2700.

Lake has hundreds of miles within the jurisdiction of two different
States, Arkansas and Missouri. The boating, safety, hunting and
fishing regulations, as well as the Legal System of the State

Bull Shoals Lake offers some of the finest and most varied fresh
water fishing anywhere. On average it is a warm water lake offering
the standard varieties of warm water fishing such as Large Mouth
Bass, Spotted Bass, White Bass, Stripers, Crappie, Channel Cat,
Bream, other panfish, and Walleye. On the upper end of the Lake,
near the portion of her headwaters consisting of the tailwaters
of Lake Taneycomo, there is enough temperature variation to offer
Trout fishing for both Rainbow and Brown Trout. It should also
be pointed out that the tailwaters of the Bull Shoals Dam feed
the White River and its world class Brown Trout fishery. Excellent
Rainbow and Brown Trout fishing is also provided in Lake Taneycomo
located above the Power Site Dam near Forsyth, Missouri.
The Lake provides excellent fishing all year long, seldom freezes,
and has no closed season. In the Spring of the year the upper
end of the Lake is renowned for its fabulous White Bass and Walleyes
fishing. Obviously the best Large Mouth fishing will be in the
Spring and Fall of the year but excellent Large Mouth and Spotted
Bass fishing is available all year providing the angler is willing
to modify their tactics to fit the changing conditions. Night
fishing for Stripers, Walleyes, and Trout is very popular and
efficient with the Lake fast developing a reputation for excellent
night time Striper Fishing.
Warning: It should be remembered that the shoreline of Bull Shoals
Lake has hundreds of miles within the jurisdiction of two different
States, Arkansas and Missouri. The boating and fishing regulations
of the State you are in applies. Know which state you are in and
be licensed and in compliance with its fishing and boating regulations.
There is a big chance for embarrassment if caught fishing in Arkansas
with only a Missouri Fishing License or being caught in Missouri
with only an Arkansas Fishing License.
