The Shepherd of the Hills Homestead and Outdoor Theatre represent
more than a tourist attraction to the Ozarks area. It marks the
spot where Ozark tourism was born in 1907.
Wright's novel is responsible for drawing thousands of tourists
to the Ozarks, long before tourism became an industry in the area.
They came over roads that weren't much more than cattle paths
to see the Matthew's home, Inspiration Point and the other sites
he made famous in what was known as The Shepherd of the Hills
country.
From those beginnings, tourism has grown into Missouri's second
largest industry. Much of that industry is represented in the
Branson area. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to Harold Bell Wright
for creating a national interest in that portion of the Ozarks
known as the Shepherd of the Hills country.
