BRANSON, MO – On Thursday, Dec. 19, the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) unveiled its newly constructed Shepherd of the Hills Conservation Education Center (the Fish Hatchery) in Branson — one of the Midwest’s most popular tourist destinations!
The celebration included a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring members of the Missouri Conservation Commission, MDC staff, state legislators, and local officials. The state-of-the-art facility, located at 483 Hatchery Road adjacent to MDC’s Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery, will open four months ahead of schedule. Construction of the $7 million center was completed by Branco Enterprises Inc. of Neosho.
A Conservation Destination
The new facility, more than double the size of the previous building, offers a variety of modern features designed to educate and inspire visitors. Key highlights include:
- A 7,500-gallon indoor aquarium showcasing aquatic life.
- A large multi-purpose room that can be divided into two classrooms, with one dedicated to videos about trout stocking in nearby Lake Taneycomo and the other for educational programs and meetings.
- New interactive exhibits highlighting conservation efforts.
- Expanded amenities such as a larger lobby, more spacious restrooms, and additional office space for staff.
Opening to the Public
After the ribbon-cutting ceremony December 19th, the center will officially open its doors to the public! Visitors can also enjoy the popular fish-feeding activities along the trout-rearing raceways located between the education center and the hatchery building. The new center will operate Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A Rich History of Conservation
The Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery has been a beloved destination for decades. Its scenic location and free conservation-oriented tours have drawn visitors from near and far. With more than one million trout raised annually, the hatchery plays a vital role in supporting Missouri’s aquatic ecosystems. During peak summer months, the facility welcomes as many as 1,800 visitors daily. Since the original building’s opening in 1980, over eight million guests have passed through its doors.
